Ungoliant Ungoliant was a mighty and evil spirit who came to the world before the Trees of the Valar were made. She took the form of a giant spider and settled in the waste land of Avathar. After she had helped Melkor destroy the two trees of Valinor she demanded the stolen silmarils of him. When he refused she attacked him but when Melkor called forth the balrogs she was forced to flee south there to remain until the end of her days. It is said that she in her last hunger devoured herself .She is the mother of Shelob.
